Enrollment near budget; special education counts continue to rise, district says

Port Angeles School District staff reported on enrollment and special education counts to the board, saying December enrollment came close to budgeted levels but the district’s four-month funded average remained below budget.
The district’s presenter said December enrollment was close to the budgeted figure and highlighted the four-month average as the number used for state funding. "We're still, you know, looking at a deficit of about 20 FTE," the presenter said, noting the district will continue efforts to increase the average used for apportionment.
On special education, staff reported recent month-over-month increases. The presenter described growth from 626 to 637 and said the most recent month was "about 640," adding that the rate of increase has slowed and that the district was "happy" the month-over-month rise was only three students in the most recent reporting period.
Board members asked for building-level breakdowns during future reports and raised questions about program capacity and supports for students experiencing homelessness; staff agreed to provide additional detail on FTE and building-level numbers upon request.
No formal action was taken on the enrollment report.
