Associate superintendent presenters said the update responds to federal program monitoring and to changes in assessment practice. Historically FitnessGram included a BMI-based component with gender- and age-specific benchmarks. Presenters explained that with adoption of an inclusive gender identity option (including non-binary), the district removed the BMI-based reporting element and now administers a physical fitness assessment that reports participation rates (for example, the number of ninth-grade students who take the assessment) rather than gendered BMI categories. Trustees asked clarifying questions about the FitnessGram, whether it is required by the state, and the consequences of students not passing the assessment; staff replied that it is an annual assessment administered in ninth-grade PE and that failing the test carries no graduation penalty—only participation is reported to the state.
As a first reading, no adoption occurred. Staff indicated they will bring the policy back for additional consideration consistent with federal monitoring requirements.
