Beresford council approves audit engagement, designates newspaper and depositories, and clears several contracts and permits

At its January meeting the Beresford City Council approved a series of routine administrative items including an audit engagement, official designations, construction pay requests and scheduling of upcoming hearings and elections.
Audit engagement and annual report: Council authorized the finance officer to sign an engagement letter with ELO (auditors) to perform the annual audit. The fee for the engagement was stated as $4,125, an increase of $375 from the prior year; the audit was scheduled for Feb. 4–5. The motion carried.
Official designations: The council declared the Beresford Western Republican as the city’s official legal newspaper for publishing required notices. The council also designated official depositaries for city funds, listing First Savings, First Dakota National, First Dakota Trust, South Dakota FIT and U.S. Bank; that motion carried.
Contracts and pay requests: The council approved pay request No. 2 to Gil (Hagen/Hawkins—transcript spelling varies) for a patio addition in the amount reported as $39,301.83 and approved site work pay requests and sidewalk payments (figures discussed included $81,800 for site work and $81,873.50 for sidewalks). Staff noted the project remains within budget.
Elections and hearings: The council set the election date as April 8, 2025, as a joint election with the school district. The council also set a public hearing for a one‑day malt beverage license application from the Beresford Volunteer Fire Department for a casino‑night fundraiser on Feb. 1, 2025; the hearing date was scheduled for Jan. 21, 2025.
Personnel and volunteer items: The council accepted the 2025 roster for the volunteer fire department for workers’ compensation coverage and approved a step increase for Tanner Mason in the street department (step 29/19). The council also accepted a review of the emergency management state operations report for 2024.
Ending: Most items were routine and carried by voice vote. Staff will finalize paperwork and provide required notices and documentation in follow‑up.
