Senator Matt Regier (Senate District 5) was elected president of the Montana Senate by acclamation on opening day. The nomination was offered from the floor and, after a motion to close nominations, the body voted by voice and the president announced the election by acclamation.
Senator Fuller nominated Regier and moved that the nomination carry with it the name of a senator to serve as president pro tempore. Following a motion to close nominations by Senator Flowers, the Senate declared Regier elected. The clerk and the president exchanged ceremonial remarks and Regier assumed the chair.
On the president's appointments, the chamber confirmed several temporary officers. The president's earlier temporary appointment of Marissa Stockton as temporary secretary of the Senate was submitted for confirmation along with the appointments of Keith Johnson as chaplain and Ray Todd as sergeant at arms. The Senate voted by voice; the presiding officer announced that the ayes had it and the appointments were confirmed.
The newly organized Senate then appointed select committees to notify the governor, the Supreme Court and the House of Representatives that the Senate was organized and ready for business; those select committees reported back and were discharged.
No roll-call vote tally was recorded on the presidential election (election by acclamation) and the confirmations were decided by voice vote as recorded on the floor. The Senate adjourned to reconvene the next legislative day.
