Greenville City Council on Jan. 9 approved a memorandum of agreement with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission to install a fishing pier at Wildwood Park.
Parks staff and the commission described the pier as sited adjacent to the park's existing boat dock. Don Octavin, who appeared for the parks department, said the pier's primary purpose is to provide a place for people to fish and reduce fishing pressure on the boat dock and kayak launch. Council members asked whether the pier could be marketed or labeled in a way that encouraged non-anglers to use it for observation; Council member Marianne Blackburn suggested language such as "fishing and observation pier" and staff said they would discuss naming and signage with the Wildlife Resources Commission and update maps and park materials accordingly.
The council voted 6-0 to approve the memorandum of agreement. Staff said the pier would be shown on the park map online and that signage and mapping could clarify multiple uses for the new structure.
