Council members flag fentanyl overdoses, Broadway Flats response, trafficking enforcement and federal immigration threats

Several councilmembers used the Jan. 6 briefing to raise overlapping public‑safety, public‑health and enforcement concerns: fentanyl overdoses in parks, the Broadway Flats conversion of encampment residents into housing, implementation of anti‑trafficking enforcement, tree‑ordinance violations and federal pressure on sanctuary jurisdictions.

Councilmember Theresa Hollingsworth recounted a recent overdose in a park adjacent to a school in which firefighters performed extended CPR and ultimately found a pulse. She told colleagues that the incident underscores the ongoing fentanyl public‑health crisis and its proximity to children: “A lot of these places are also by schools,” she said, and emphasized coordination with the Family, Education, Preschool Promise (FEPP) levy and youth programs.
