Planning commission approves Southern Path RV camp plan with conditions after traffic concerns

Why this matters: residents said the Highway 59/Trawick Road area already experiences speed and safety problems and cited three recent accidents, including a fatality. Commissioners and staff said ALDOT’s permit process will identify whether turn lanes or other roadway improvements are required as part of the state permitting and construction review.
At the Jan. 9 meeting, staff summarized changes the applicant made after earlier review, including shifting the proposed access alignment south to better match existing medians. Staff’s recommended conditions included obtaining the ALDOT permit for the revised access, providing the permit copy before construction-plan submittal, recording any required subdivision exemption documents, and adjusting detention/drainage design to match the revised road alignment.
Several residents spoke in opposition or with concern. Sylvia Stewart, who said she lives on Trawick Road near the site, told commissioners she and neighbors worry the RV park will be incompatible with the neighborhood and increase traffic hazards. Staff and the applicant’s representative said ALDOT will evaluate turn-lane and sight-distance needs during the formal permitting process; county staff said ALDOT may require turn-lane construction if the state determines it necessary.
Commissioner Brandon Bias moved to approve the PUD subject to staff conditions; the motion carried with no recorded dissents.
Staff noted that approval at the planning commission stage does not remove ALDOT permitting requirements or county permitting steps; required turn-lane or roadway construction would be addressed and enforced during those follow-up approvals.
