The Brownsville Historic Preservation Commission voted to approve several design and demolition items and ratified changes to the commission's calendar and architectural review committee schedule.
Commission staff member Mr. Velez reported that the Architectural Review Committee will meet as needed on the 4th Thursdays at noon and asked the commission to approve the calendar; commissioners approved the schedule with exceptions noted for the November/December conflict and asked staff to provide revised dates if needed.
The commission opened and closed a public hearing on a multi-part application for 1704 East Taylor Street. Designer Mr. Gomez explained that the applicant revised the plan after an earlier meeting so the two-story building would be at the rear lot and a single-story house would face East Taylor. Commissioners sought clarification about which elevations face East Taylor and East 17th Street and how the units are oriented; Gomez clarified the ground-floor unit fronts Taylor Street while the upper unit's stair access is oriented toward 17th Street. After discussion, a motion to approve the demolition and new design for the project (items 3 and 4) was made, seconded and passed.
On the Alamo-area rear wall and fence matter staff reviewed historic photographs and materials and recommended approval while asking the city's service division to be more vigilant about matching historic mortar and brick profiles on future work. The commission moved, seconded and approved the Alamo fence/wall as presented.
Commissioners also ratified the architectural review committee decision on the Tamayo House infill and approved the recommendation to ratify previous ARC action.
Votes taken by the commission during the meeting included approval of minutes from the Dec. 13, 2024 meeting (voice vote), approval of the 2025 ARC meeting dates with noted exceptions (voice vote), approval of demolition and new design for 1704 E. Taylor (items 3 and 4), approval of the Alamo fence/wall project, and ratification of the Tamayo House item. A separate motion denied the 55 E. Lehi tax-exemption request (see separate article).
All motions reported in the transcript passed by voice vote; roll-call tallies were not provided in the meeting record.
