Council approves application for $16,000 historic‑resource inventory grant

Councilor Robin Wheatley, speaking as the council’s liaison to the Historic Preservation Commission, said the inventory has not been refreshed in about 30 years and that delaying an application would mean waiting another year before the city was eligible again. Wheatley asked the council to approve the application now so the commission could move forward.
Councilors voted unanimously to authorize the application. The Historic Preservation Commission plans to use the grant funds to survey downtown resources, confirm which buildings remain on the inventory, and identify updates and additions. Staff noted the full commission work plan will return to council in March, but the grant deadline required earlier approval to proceed.
No appropriation decision was made at the meeting; council action authorized only pursuit of the grant application and acceptance if awarded, subject to any future budget adjustments.
