Glynn County school board elects Dr. Hank Yergin chair, Mike Hulsey vice chair

Dr. Hank Yergin was elected chair and Mike Hulsey was elected vice chair of the Glynn County Board of Education during a Jan. 9 workshop meeting, board members said.

The vote for each position was conducted by nominations from the floor followed by a show of hands. Nominations were uncontested and the board chair announced both elections were unanimous. The board also reviewed its annual ethics document and confirmed it will be signed after the meeting, a routine requirement the board said is mandated by law.

Board members opened nominations for chair and vice chair under the board’s standard floor‑nomination procedure, which the presiding official described as allowing self‑nominations and not requiring seconds. After asking Dr. Yergin if he would serve if elected, the presiding member called for a hand vote; the chair declared the result unanimous. The same open‑nomination process produced Mike Hulsey as vice chair.

During brief remarks the outgoing chair, Edie Sams, was thanked for two years of service; the newly elected leaders welcomed new board members Jeff Dodge and Susan Lee. Dr. Spence, the district superintendent, was recognized for his service and an upcoming retirement referenced during opening remarks.

In addition to the organizational votes, the board chair reminded members that the district’s ethics policy is reviewed and signed annually and that the district follows the state travel policy, which must be reflected in local procedures. The board did not take a formal recorded roll‑call vote on the ethics document at the workshop; the chair said board members would sign the document after the meeting.

The meeting then moved on to informational agenda items including financial and facilities updates and a teacher externship report.
