Pastor Bill Jones of Griffith First United Methodist Church told the board his congregation collected and delivered classroom supplies to Wadsworth and contributed $437 in monetary donations.
Jones listed counts of donated items the congregation delivered: 186 notebooks, 107 boxes of crayons, 565 64-count packages of pencils, 117 erasers, 95 dry-erase markers, 18 colored markers, eight scissors and 160 glue sticks. The superintendent and Wadsworth staff acknowledged the donation and said supplies were well received.
During Panther Spotlight the board also honored Chief Mance, who the superintendent said served the community for 26 years and as chief since 2013; members said they will send a board gift to his home. The board welcomed Chief Tharp as the new police chief.
Superintendent Gina Smith provided several community reminders and event notices: the Polar Plunge to support Special Olympics is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 24; the Frozen production is set for Jan. 30, Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and Feb. 2, with a meet-and-greet for children on Jan. 19; and Jan. 31 is also the date of Turnabout. The superintendent urged parents to contact 911 if they observe urgent safety concerns at events where district security officers are not posted.
Board members also recognized National School Board Member Appreciation Month and praised school resource officers and officers who connect with students in the schools.
