Corvallis schools outline timeline to implement new social‑studies standards, add civics and financial‑literacy credits

The presentation, led by Nikki McFarland, high school coordinator for Corvallis School District 509J, and joined by Amy Leeson, elementary coordinator, and Kim Johnson, middle‑school coordinator and Bridges principal, described how new integrated social‑studies standards and several legislative changes will be phased in at different grade levels.
Board members were told the state has issued new integrated social‑studies standards that bring together tribal history/shared history components, Holocaust and genocide concepts and updated civics requirements. McFarland said the standards are available for teacher review and that the Oregon Department of Education normally posts a list of approved materials in October; districts then adopt and implement in the following school year. “High school teachers have reviewed the standards and identified gaps so we know what to look for in state‑provided materials,” McFarland said.
