City staff announced Jan. 8 that the City of Hawaiian Gardens will hold a grand opening for newly installed pickleball courts on Saturday, Jan. 18 at the Sea Riverly Activity Center.
Staff said the city partnered with the nonprofit Pickleball Cares for the event; the nonprofit will host free youth clinics for children ages 7 to 17 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 11:30 a.m. and open play beginning at 12 p.m. Staff said there will be music and light refreshments at the event.
A member of the public used the public-comment period to say he had heard the city would install pickleball courts and expressed support for the project. The speaker, who did not give a full name on the record, said he was “very glad” the city is moving in that direction and offered to help the city with information from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for budgeting and outreach related to youth and education.
Separately, staff recognized winners of the city’s holiday home-decorating contest. Staff said winners were selected via the city’s Instagram page and reported “over 1,200 likes” across contest posts. The council presented certificates to the third-place Estrada family (Bridal Street), the second-place Alfaro family (Elaine Avenue) and the first-place Soto family (22nd Street). Marci Alfaro addressed the council during public comment to thank organizers and to note a family connection to the city.
Staff also announced other upcoming events: an All-Star Band recognition (for Artesia High School band participation in the Rose Parade), an ATGM program banquet for teen flag-football participants on Friday, Jan. 17 at 6 p.m., and a volunteer appreciation dinner at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 at the Sea Riverly Activity Center.
City staff asked residents to contact staff for additional information and to provide contact details for follow-up; Eric Lee, the city’s special events coordinator who was scheduled to present, was not in attendance.
No council action was required for the announcements or the contest recognitions beyond ceremonial certificates and scheduled event planning.
