Commission waives facility fee for MLK event; Parks & Rec to hold tree dedication Jan. 20

The City Commission of High Springs on Jan. 9 voted to waive the facility fee for a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event organized by the Douglas Historical School Society Incorporated.
The motion to waive the fee was moved and seconded by commissioners and approved by voice vote. The event is scheduled for Jan. 20: participants will assemble at City Hall at 2 p.m., march to Catherine Taylor Park and then proceed to ceremonies at the Douglass (Douglas) Community Center at about 3 p.m.
High Springs Parks & Recreation representatives, including Jennifer Appleby and Linda Tanner, described a tree-dedication and shade-area project at Catherine Taylor Park that will be unveiled during the MLK commemoration. The plan calls for planting live oaks and installing benches and picnic seating in a shaded area adjacent to the playground and basketball court; Landscapes Unlimited was named as a supplier offering a discount. Parks & Rec said an arborist will provide brief instruction on tree planting and care during the dedication.
Parks & Rec also thanked Captain Kevin Pearson and the fire department for providing CPR training to staff; a free public CPR class is scheduled for Feb. 8 at the Douglas Center.
