Construction and architecture staff presented progress photos and schedule updates for several Madison County School projects at the Jan. 9 meeting.
Jonathan Smith provided an update on the Madison Middle School project, saying drywall and first coats of paint have gone up in long stretches of the interior, ceiling-grid work will begin imminently, and final exterior doors were scheduled for installation the following Monday so the building can be fully secured. Smith said temporary heat is in place and crews expect permanent power to be connected in about 30 days, which will allow mechanical systems to be powered for testing.
Smith also said contracts and purchase orders for Waco Elementary are largely returned and a pre-construction meeting was scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 16 at 1:30 p.m. at the board office to get the Waco project underway, with shop drawings and material orders moving forward.
Tony Thomas of Clarkville Timber Semacar Architects presented images from multiple sites, including progress at the Phillips project (about 80–85% complete by his estimate) and exterior work at the Madison Middle site. Thomas noted that snow and cold weather limited outdoor activity but interior finishing continued.
Board action on construction agenda items: - Approved the BG-4 for Madison Southern High School Bleacher Project (project closeout form). - Approved Change Order No. 4 (credit $25,000) for the Richmond ATC Ignite North project and approved the BG-4 for the Richmond ATC Ignite North project. - Approved Change Order No. 7 (credit $18,600) for the CTC Ignite South project and approved the BG-4 for CTC Ignite South. - Approved BG-5 (closeout) for Madison Southern High School roof replacement.
Tony Thomas summarized that, when paired, the two tech-center projects (ATC and CTC) essentially balanced against their bid-day budgets after credits and change-order adjustments; he provided cost-per-square-foot figures for context and noted the district completed those tech-center projects before construction-cost inflation accelerated.
Why it matters: Approvals of BG-4 and BG-5 forms close out capital projects and free up funds for other projects; the Waco pre-construction meeting and BG-1/BG resolution steps (approved elsewhere on the agenda) move that elementary project into active procurement and construction phases.
