Macedonia council approves pay-schedule change for fire inspectors, extends engineering contract and clears 2025 road program including $402,000 OPWC-funded L.L

Macedonia City Council on Jan. 9 approved changes to the city’s personnel pay schedule to allow additional part-time fire inspectors, amended the city’s engineering agreement, and authorized bids for two resurfacing projects, including a Ledge Road job partly funded by an Ohio Public Works Commission grant.

The measures were adopted by voice votes during the regular meeting at Macedonia City Hall. Council also completed its annual officer elections and committee assignments before moving to an executive session under Ohio law.

Chief Ripley told council the ordinance changing the non‑union compensation schedule would formally allow more part‑time inspectors. “This just increases the number of part time inspectors we have,” he said, explaining the fire prevention bureau currently has one full‑time 40‑hour inspector and has been using part‑time staff for inspections, fire investigation, preplanning and public education. Council voted to adopt Ordinance No. 12025, which the clerk posted according to law.

Council next amended the compensation terms in its contract with Chagrin Valley Engineering, authorizing the city to continue to contract engineering services at updated rates. Director Giladi and other council members noted the firm’s success in bringing grant funding to the city; the mayor cited a recent grant that will cover half of the Ledge Road project as an example of that value. Council passed Ordinance 2, 2025.

Council then approved Resolution 3, 2025, authorizing the city engineer to prepare plans and advertise for bids to resurface Ledge Road from North Bedford to Shepherd. Director Giladi said the project is 50% funded by an Ohio Public Works Commission (OPWC) grant worth $402,000.

Resolution 4, 2025, authorizing the city engineer to prepare plans and advertise for bids for the 2025 road improvement program, also passed. The road list discussed during the meeting included Bobolink, Highland Point Parkway, Hampton, Sherwood, Ashford and Starlight; Ledge Road will be contracted separately. Council members said Starlight moved from a possible alternate into the contract after further analysis.

The council completed its annual internal elections and appointments by voice vote: Jeff Garvis was elected council president; Vinnie Ventura was elected vice president and named finance chair; Miss Brandt retained the council’s Parks and Recreation representative slot; Garvis and Ventura were named to the Fireman’s Dependency Board; and Garvis and Ventura (along with Brandt) were listed in other committee roles as recorded in the meeting minutes. Nominations and voice approvals were recorded on the meeting record.

Before adjourning, Council moved into executive session under Ohio Revised Code section 121.22(G)(1) to discuss the appointment, employment, dismissal, discipline, promotion, demotion or compensation of a public employee or official; no public action was recorded immediately on the meeting record following the motion.
