Plano highlights reopened Florence Shapiro City Council Chambers, upgrades to audio-visual and accessibility

Steve Stoler, host of the City of Plano podcast Inside Plano, and co‑host Shawna Haley used the program to highlight the newly reopened Florence Shapiro City Council Chambers and recent facility upgrades.

"They've made it so much easier for everyone, whether you're in the room or watching online, to follow along," said Steve Stoler, host, Inside Plano. The hosts described updates intended to modernize the space, improve accessibility and make meetings easier to follow for in‑room and online viewers.

The podcast credited changes including an upgraded audio‑visual system, large LED screens, additional wall displays and on‑screen voting that shows each council member's picture alongside their vote. Stoler said the upgrades also support captioning during meetings. "For me, having the additional video features is really a game changer for accessibility because it's allowed us to do captioning throughout the meetings as well," he said.

Shawna Haley, host, Inside Plano, said the chambers also received improvements to seating and wheelchair access to make the space more welcoming. "We've made it easier to access it if you have wheelchair access," Haley said, adding the updates reflect the goal of being "welcoming and open to everyone in the community." The hosts noted the physical space is named for Florence Shapiro.

The episode reviewed how residents can observe and participate in local meetings. Residents may attend in person or join online through Zoom and may watch broadcasts on Facebook, YouTube or planotv.org. The hosts directed listeners to plano.gov for meeting schedules, agendas and the public‑comment sign‑up process and said detailed participation guidelines are posted on that site.
