Veterans Service office reports higher workload in 2024, lists claim and outreach numbers

The Sawyer County Veterans Service Department reported increased workload in 2024, including more client contacts and disability claims, at the Administrative Committee meeting.
Nicole, representing the Veterans Service Department, said December activity included 489 phone calls, 777 pieces of written correspondence (letters, emails and faxes) and 202 office visits. "We did have an increase, which was great to show," Nicole said, summarizing year-over-year growth in the office's activity.
Nicole reported that the office submitted 226 disability claims in 2024 and that retroactive payments decided in veterans' favor totaled $490,721.60. She said the office saw an increase in claims and benefits compared with 2023 and that the workload perspective included with the report justified staffing needs.
The department also co-hosted counseling sessions in partnership with the La Crosse Vet Center and continued its monthly "coffee and conversation" outreach. Staff said social media reach increased modestly and that the office is conducting a Valentine's collection drive for veterans in nursing homes; volunteers and the public can contribute items and artwork gathered at local schools.
Committee members asked clarifying questions and thanked staff for the report. No formal action was taken; the report was accepted for committee review.
