Sawyer County committee pauses planning for veterans honor project amid questions over scope and site

At a Sawyer County Administrative Committee meeting, members voted to table active planning and committee formation for a proposed veterans honor project while the county seeks more clarity on the project's purpose, scope and site selection.

The item was discussed after public comment and staff briefing on the project's status. County staff reported that funds had been moved in the 2025 budget into a dedicated veterans line. "The money was budgeted into the 25 budget or moved from the resource development fund into a veterans honor park line," said Mr. Alvarado, county staff, summarizing the current financial status of the item.

Committee members and public speakers said the proposal lacked a clear, shared vision. Several members said the word "park" created expectations of picnic areas, parking and open fields that some residents opposed for the proposed site. One committee member said the proposal was "left up to everybody's imagination," and urged a defined purpose before choosing a site.

Several members and speakers argued for greater veteran involvement in shaping the project. Nicole, a member of veterans services staff, recommended engaging veteran organizations such as the county Veterans Association and the American Legion to develop a vision that reflected veterans' preferences. She said bringing veteran organizations into planning could "unify the veterans with this project" and better define whether the county is building a memorial, a gathering space, or another type of facility.

Committee member Mr. Buckle moved to table further planning of the veterans memorial and associated committee formation; the motion was seconded by Tom Duffy. The committee chair called for a voice vote; the motion carried on a voice vote with no recorded opposing votes.

Committee members clarified the motion's effect: tabling would pause active planning and committee formation but leave the budget allocation in place. Chair Andy (County Board chair and Administrative Committee chair) and other members said the item could remain on future agendas so that any new proposals or interest could be considered without rescinding budgeted funds. Some members said they planned to seek additional input from veterans by attending veterans association meetings or meeting with maintenance and city representatives to better understand maintenance and partnering implications.

The committee did not establish an ad hoc planning committee at the meeting and did not select a site. Members agreed the county's Veterans Service Office, veterans organizations and maintenance staff should be consulted before any new steps are taken.

The vote pauses committee-driven planning but leaves the allocation available should a clearly defined proposal or partnership emerge.

The committee moved to the next agenda items after the vote; no schedule for returning the item was mandated beyond standard agenda processes.
