Three new members sworn into Norfolk Public Schools board

Retired Col. Kenneth Paulson and two newly elected members, Sarah DeCalleggero and Alfreda Thomas, were sworn in as members of the City of Norfolk School Board in a brief ceremony held prior to the board’s organizational meeting on Jan. 8, 2025. George Shaffer, clerk of the Norfolk Circuit Court, administered oaths of office.
The three officials each repeated the oath to “support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Virginia” and to “faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as a school board member of the school board of the City of Norfolk.” Paulson’s oath recorded his term as beginning Nov. 28, 2024 and expiring Dec. 31, 2026; DeCalleggero and Thomas’ oaths recorded terms beginning Jan. 1, 2025 and expiring Dec. 31, 2029.
After the oath, the new members were invited to make brief remarks. Alfreda Thomas thanked voters in Super Ward 7 and said, “I love you,” to supporters; Sarah DeCalleggero said she would represent all parts of the city, not just one ward, and pledged to “do the best that I can do as I swore to.” Kenneth Paulson, who earlier took the oath, offered brief remarks of support for board priorities.
The ceremony concluded with a reception announced for the hallway. City officials and staff in attendance included Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fadahi, Councilman J.P. Page and Councilwoman Andrea McClellan, who were recognized during closing remarks.
