Board approves creation and hiring of assistant maintenance supervisor using fund balance

The Jefferson County School Board voted unanimously to create an assistant maintenance supervisor position and to fund the role from the district’s fund balance.

"I'd like to make a motion that we go ahead and hire an assistant maintenance supervisor position," Board member Mister Hargett said during new business, adding that the position would be paid from the fund balance. The motion was seconded and approved by a voice vote with all board members in favor.

Board discussion addressed process and oversight. Board members said the position is a new supervisory post that will require subsequent presentation to the county commission. A board member suggested that the superintendent and the maintenance committee collaborate on recruitment and then bring a recommended candidate to the full board for final approval.

Board members also discussed budget timing: the item will go to the budget committee and then to the county commission as required for a new position. The board did not adopt a job posting or candidate at the meeting; the vote authorized creating the position and using fund balance to cover the cost until formal budgeting processes complete.

The motion passed by roll call as recorded in the meeting: five in favor, zero opposed. Board members asked staff to return with a candidate recommendation and to present the position to the budget committee and county commission as required.
