The Education Foundation of Putnam County asked the delegation for $337,000 to expand an aerospace training program that prepares students for careers in aviation, manufacturing and engineering.
Heather Hudson, chair of the foundation, told the delegation the program used prior state appropriations to place 200 students in aerospace training this year and that roughly 27 students will graduate with pilot's licenses. The foundation wants to expand the program to emphasize engineering and manufacturing pathways and set a long-term goal of introducing as many as 600 students per year to the industry.
Hudson said the foundation has completed paperwork for House and Senate appropriations and invited delegation members to follow up with questions. Delegation members acknowledged the proposal and did not take formal funding action at the meeting.
