Coconut Creek promotes three officers to sergeant; commission approves K-9 purchase for Sergeant Amanda Cummings

Coconut Creek promoted three officers to the rank of sergeant Thursday night and approved a resolution to purchase a K-9 for one of the newly promoted sergeants.

At a ceremony early in the meeting Chief [title] Bridal Hoefer introduced and pinned Sergeant Amanda Cummings, Sergeant Kennard Garvey and Sergeant Jason Thomas. The chief noted the sergeants placed first, second and third on the departments sergeants exam, respectively, and highlighted prior service records, training roles and community contributions for each officer.

Later in the agenda the commission considered Resolution 2025-008 authorizing the city manager or designee to execute an agreement with Sergeant Amanda L. Cummings for the purchase of a K-9. Staff said the purchase is customary when a handler and dog have bonded and the dog reaches an age at which it cannot be reassigned. The purchase ensures continuity for the handler and K-9 team; the chief said K-9 Nobles formal retirement will be announced on a future agenda.

The commission voted to approve the K-9 purchase resolution on roll-call after the chiefs presentation. Commissioners offered public commendations to the promoted officers and their families who attended the ceremony.
