Committee allows county to apply for state cybersecurity grant after late notice

Rutherford County staff told the Finance Committee that the state encouraged the county to apply for a second-year cybersecurity grant administered by Strategic Technology Solutions; the committee agreed to allow the county to submit applications covering sheriff’s-office, emergency management and other county-wide cybersecurity needs.
Cody York briefed commissioners on the application components and amounts: separate application pieces were listed as $400,000, $500,000 and $50,000, plus one component described as a $0 entry for state-administered licenses. York said the grant is no-match and, based on prior practice, awards may not be announced for eight to 10 months. The county will bring any eventual award back to the committee for formal approval before expenditures begin.
Commissioners asked whether awards would create ongoing obligations; York said the requested items were purchases or licenses that could be discontinued if not renewed and would not obligate the county to multi-year staffing costs. Commissioner Johnson asked whether county consolidated services such as the CCRC (county network) would benefit; York said countywide components would, and the CCRC could see benefits because it sits on the county network. No formal vote was required to submit the application; the committee authorized staff to proceed with filing the application.
