Nine Salt Lake County officials sworn in; new and returning leaders stress homelessness, accessibility and fiscal stewardship

Nine newly elected and re-elected Salt Lake County officials took the oath of office at a public swearing-in ceremony, where several used their remarks to outline priorities for the next four years.

At the event, officials sworn in included Mayor Jenny Wilson; Natalie Pinkney, county council at-large; Carlos Alejandro Moreno Dominguez, county council district 2; Ross Isaac Romero, county council district 4; Dee Theodore, county council district 6; Rochelle Hobbs, county recorder; Chris Stavros, county assessor; Bradley Park, county surveyor; and Sheila Telford Srivastava, county treasurer. The ceremony included presentations by the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office honor guard, a choir from Magna Elementary School and remarks from emcee Doug Wright.

Why it matters: County elected officials set policy and direct departments that manage jails, transportation, parks, property valuation and financial services. Officials used the ceremony to signal priorities voters can expect them to pursue, including homelessness and housing supports, accessibility for residents with disabilities, representation for Westside communities and continued modernization of county fiscal and property-assessment systems.

Several newly sworn members emphasized listening to residents and addressing local needs. Natalie Pinkney, county council at-large, said she would prioritize constituent outreach and cited specific encounters that shaped her agenda, including a senior who described giving a jacket and a meal to her son after his release from jail. "I will never forget your story, and I will work for you," Pinkney said.

Carlos Alejandro Moreno Dominguez, sworn as the district 2 council member, framed his election as a responsibility to the Westside communities he represents and said he intends to bring leadership to areas he described as growing quickly. Ross Romero, district 4, and Dee Theodore, district 6, thanked family and volunteers and both described a readiness to learn county operations and collaborate across departments. Theodore specifically listed county priorities he intends to engage with, including a new search-and-rescue building, transportation, homelessness and jail issues.

Assessor Chris Stavros described continued technical improvements in the assessor's office, saying the county uses advanced valuation methods for different property types and that those methods have reduced appeals. "No taxpayer should ever pay the wrong amount of taxes, or not pay their fair share due to a valuation error," Stavros said, adding that the office aims to remain customer-focused, open and transparent.

Sheila Telford Srivastava, the new county treasurer, said she was stepping into a well-functioning office and pledged to honor the legacy of the prior treasurer while focusing on service to residents. "I am at your service, and I will keep that in mind with every decision in my day," she said.

Mayor Jenny Wilson used a mountain-climbing metaphor to describe the work ahead and urged collaboration across political lines. "You should stick on the main trail. Safer. It's not as rocky. Let's not diverge," Wilson said, urging the group to work together to reach shared goals.

The ceremony closed with an invitation for attendees to continue visiting in the lobby, where refreshments and a piano performance by a recipient of the county's zoo, arts and parks grants were scheduled.

No formal votes or policy actions were taken at the event; the gathering was ceremonial and focused on oaths, remarks and brief policy priorities announced by the newly sworn officials.
