Council appoints Osman Salahuddin to fill 48th District state House vacancy

The Metropolitan King County Council on Tuesday appointed Redmond City Councilmember Osman Salahuddin to the Washington State House seat for the 48th Legislative District, approving Proposed Motion 2025-009 as amended.
Councilmember Claudia Balducci moved the amendment to insert Salahuddin’s name; the amendment passed and the full motion carried on the roll call (vote recorded as 9 ayes in favor where present). The council then completed the administrative steps to seat the newly appointed representative.
The decision followed an extended public hearing in which dozens of residents, labor leaders, students and nonprofit leaders endorsed Salahuddin. Testimony included support from labor unions, local elected officials, the Snoqualmie tribal chairman, education advocates and many younger residents who said Salahuddin has engaged youth and community groups in the district.
Salahuddin, a product of the district’s public schools, described his priorities to the council: increasing access to higher education, expanding behavioral-health and crisis-response options, improving affordable and supportive housing, and boosting workforce pathways that connect to local employers. He emphasized his local government experience, prior work with student-government advocacy and nonprofit projects focused on health-care careers.
Supporters in the public hearing said Salahuddin has experience building youth programs and cross-cultural partnerships, that he understands local public-safety and human-services priorities, and that his life experience — as a renter, son of immigrants and recent local elected official — would help him represent diverse district constituencies.
