Shakopee council accepts $1,500 donation for women’s water-safety classes

The Shakopee City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved Resolution R2025-002 to accept a $1,500 donation from local volunteer Sue Westergaard to fund the city’s women’s water-safety program.
The donation was presented during the meeting by the city’s recreation manager, who introduced Westergaard and asked the council to accept the gift. "One of the many joys of my position as recreation manager is I get to meet people who enjoy sharing their love and passion for recreation with members of the community," the recreation manager said before Westergaard addressed the council.
Westergaard told the council the donation is given "in memory of my best friend, Kathy," and described the program’s work teaching basic strokes and water comfort, including a recent session on riptide safety. "My thanks to everyone who makes this program a success," she said.
Councilmember Lara moved to approve the resolution; Councilmember Contreras seconded. The council voted unanimously in favor. Mayor and council members voiced thanks to Westergaard and to community-center staff for running the program.
The resolution directs the accepted funds to the city’s women’s water-safety classes at the Shakopee Community Center and appears on the consent agenda as R2025-002. No amendments or conditions were recorded at the meeting.
Council discussion before the motion included brief expressions of appreciation for volunteers and staff support but did not change the terms of the donation. The measure passed by voice vote with all members present voting "aye."
