Ocean Shores Parks Board members said the City Council approved a package of capital requests that includes resurfacing and converting part of the Emerson tennis complex to pickleball.
The board’s chair, Kristen Hartman, said council “approved all of our requests,” and the board announced a plan to convert one tennis court into multiple pickleball courts while leaving another court dedicated to tennis. Hartman said the approved items also include resurfacing, two benches and a drinking fountain as part of the Emerson project.
Hartman said she wants an ad hoc committee to coordinate with Public Works and vendors. She named Connie (last name not specified), Phil (last name not specified) and Jeff Byerly as the park-side members and said the committee will work with Public Works staff Becky Leach and Tim Kyle. “That stands,” Becky Leach said when discussing an estimate deadline from a contractor; board members said the contractor agreed to honor a prior quote.
Jeff Byerly, a parks board member, summarized the conversion plan: one tennis court would be restriped to accommodate four pickleball courts; the other tennis court would remain for tennis players. Board members discussed adding two benches and a water fountain near the courts and noted the city had approved increased maintenance funding for parks operations.
Board members said they would consider a library partnership to loan pickleball equipment so residents can try the sport before purchasing gear. Hartman and members also raised the possibility of forming a city recreation league in the future but said the immediate focus is on completing the resurfacing and installation.
The board did not list contract awards or final contractor names during the meeting. Dates and final vendor selection were not specified.
Votes at the meeting: the board approved the meeting agenda and minutes and adjourned; no formal vote on vendor selection or construction contracts was recorded.
What’s next: the ad hoc will coordinate final quotes and scheduling with the contractor and Public Works; Hartman said an updated quote could be expected by March.
