The New Hampshire joint convention met Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2025, in Representatives Hall to receive the official returns from the Nov. 5, 2024, general election. New Hampshire Secretary of State David M. Scanlon presented county-by-county totals and reported that Kelly Ayotte received a plurality of votes for governor and was elected.
Scanlon read vote totals for counties across the state and summarized statewide totals: "Kelly Ayotte received 436,122 votes. Joyce Craig received 360,149 votes. And Stephen [as reported in the returns] received 16,202 votes," and said Ayotte’s plurality was 75,973 votes. Following the report, members of both chambers adopted a resolution accepting the returns.
Scanlon also reported results for executive council districts. He read the winners and the reported vote totals for each district; for example, in the first district Joseph Kenny was reported elected with a plurality, and the second and third district winners were read aloud and reported as having pluralities in their districts.
The joint convention adopted a resolution asking a three-house/senate committee to compare and count the returns and report back; the convention then adjourned and the House returned to its separate session. The reading of the returns and the resolutions to receive them and form the counting committee were carried by voice votes or division votes as noted from the House floor.
The joint canvass is the formal record of the returns presented by the secretary of state and does not itself create new offices or change the statutory certification process; Scanlon’s presentation recorded the state’s official tallies for the public record.
Members present observed a brief moment to honor the life of former President Jimmy Carter before proceeding to other business.
