The Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District Board of Education voted Jan. 13 to approve personnel recommendations covering items 7.1 through 7.23, with one item (7.7) removed for separate consideration and then approved after an executive-session review.
The personnel slate excluding item 7.7 was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote, with board members responding “Aye.” Board members later called for executive session to discuss a quasi-judicial matter and “the employment of a particular person,” then returned and held a separate vote on item 7.7; that motion also passed by voice vote.
Why it matters: Personnel actions set the district’s staffing and operational decisions for the coming months, including retirements, chaperone approvals and a personnel item that required confidential discussion.
Board members debated whether item 7.7 required executive-session treatment before addressing the rest of the personnel slate. After a motion and second to remove 7.7 from the initial motion, the board approved 7.1–7.23 (excluding 7.7). Later in the meeting, following an executive session, a motion on 7.7 was moved and seconded and the board voted in favor.
The personnel list the board approved included routine hires, retirements and chaperone approvals. Board members discussed a change to how chaperones are approved: under the district’s approach, anyone who may chaperone during the year will be approved once by the board; athletic chaperones approved anytime during the year may serve at other events. The board clarified pay and selection practices: work must be offered to unit members first, and non-unit individuals who accept are paid the same fixed rate set by the teacher contract.
Board members also recognized three long-serving employees on the retirement list: Linda Bohm (grade 3), Sandy Acker (teaching assistant at A.W. Becker) and Rich Vadney (operations and maintenance). Board members thanked them for “very long careers” and for their service to students.
The board’s motions on personnel followed a brief executive-session motion earlier in the meeting that the board characterized as addressing a quasi-judicial matter and an employment matter for a particular person.
Ending: The board’s personnel approvals will be reflected in the district’s personnel records and posted in board minutes; questions about specific personnel items were referred to the superintendent’s office or to the board clerk.
