Osceola County supervisors directed staff to post the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) coordinator vacancy after the incumbent submitted a resignation effective Jan. 31. The EMA board and county staff said they prefer converting the role to full time but recommended posting initially as part time to attract applicants immediately.
County staff said the EMA coordinator position is a 24/7 on-call role that can be difficult to fill on a part-time basis. The EMA board, which met separately, recommended converting the position to full time; staff noted several counties make EMA a full-time position and that a full-time coordinator would be better able to meet post-disaster demands. Supervisors raised concerns about whether now is the right time to commit to full-time pay and benefits given potential changes in state EMA funding and the county budget calendar.
The board instructed staff to post the vacancy locally (Sibley paper and county website) for a 30-day posting and said the posting could be either a part-time or full-time listing depending on the supervisors’ final decision. Members discussed the possibility of a probationary or review period if the county temporarily hires part-time. Staff also said they have discussed temporary support from O’Brien County and could pursue a short-term sharing agreement while recruitment proceeds.
Ending: Staff will post the EMA coordinator job immediately and return to the board in early February with applicant status and recommendations for whether to convert the role to full time after evaluating candidate interest and state funding outlook.
