Council agenda preview flags water system contracts and Burton Street park replacement

Assistant City Manager Ben Woody and Capital Management Director Jade Dundas highlighted several non-storm-related consent and presentation items that staff said are part of routine capital program work.

Woody described a professional services contract (item f) for $300,000 to replace filter media and underdrain structures at North Fork and Bee Tree Water Treatment Plants. Woody said these filters are more than 30 years old and that the work is routine maintenance, not part of future planned conventional-filtration upgrades that would remove sediments.

Woody also flagged a large water distribution contract (item g) for roughly $10,100,000 to replace aging water-distribution infrastructure and increase future water capacity; staff said this work is part of the Waters CIP Neighborhood Enhancement Project and represents recurring investment in distribution system maintenance.

Finally, staff identified an item (item i) to replace a playground and basketball court at the Burton Street Community Center. Woody said the project was recommended in the 2018 Burton Street Neighborhood Plan and that the contract total for the replacements is about $512,000.

Jade Dundas said the council will receive more substantive capital program briefing materials on Jan. 23, including an overview of the FEMA public assistance process, cost recovery, and how the city is sequencing bond projects, recovery work and ongoing capital projects.
