Winfield Ridge residents urge council to block proposed through‑street and install fire gate; callers also raise surveillance and parking concerns

Dozens of Newcastle residents used the public‑comment periods at the Jan. 7 Newcastle City Council meeting to press the council to block a proposed through‑street in the Winfield Ridge/Winfield Bridal neighborhood, ask the city to require a developer‑funded fire gate and call for tighter oversight on surveillance cameras and local parking enforcement.

The most sustained testimony came from Winfield Ridge residents who said a new through‑street would end the neighborhood’s cul‑de‑sac, reduce safety and lower home values. "We're gonna lose our cul de sac, which means we're gonna lose our neighborhood block parties, our basketball games, our snowball fights. But most importantly, we're gonna lose the safety for our families and specifically for our children," said Sarah Goodman, a long‑time resident. Several speakers asked the council to require a fire gate or for the developer to install and pay for one.
