Douglas County honors retiring staff and says farewell to Commissioner Maureen Boyle

Douglas County commissioners on Jan. 7 recognized long-serving county staff and marked the final meeting of Commissioner Maureen Boyle, who completed her four-year term representing District 5.

Shirley Nelson was honored for 20 years of service at the Douglas County Youth Center and earlier work at the juvenile assessment center. Mark LaFleur, a Youth Center staff member, and other colleagues praised Nelson’s professionalism and compassion. The board adopted a resolution honoring her service by a 7-0 vote.

The commission also approved recognitions for Elizabeth Hansen, who served 15 years with the Department of Public Property, and Olin Bridal, who served 24 years with the county engineering office; that motion passed on the consent/recognition vote recorded as 7-0.

Commissioner Maureen Boyle, in what the board called her final meeting, received a special recognition from the commission. Boyle reflected on her time in office, thanked colleagues and staff, and noted personal and family ties to county service. Commissioners from across the board offered remarks, praising her diligence, fact-based approach and decades-long family tradition of public service.

The board took a formal vote to adopt Shirley Nelson’s resolution (motion by Kavanaugh, second by Borgeson) and approved the other recognition items during the meeting’s consent actions. Boyle’s recognition was presented and several commissioners and staff gave personal remarks; no separate roll-call vote is recorded for the farewell presentation beyond the recognitions on the agenda.

The board invited family and staff to appear for a group photograph and offered best wishes for the retirees’ and Commissioner Boyle’s next activities.
