The Fortuna City Council on Jan. 6 confirmed a slate of appointments to outside agencies, boards and commissions and approved the staff recommendation with a follow-up to confirm one alternate's availability.
City Clerk Sienna Emmons presented the list of current primary and alternate appointees and explained the process for making or changing appointments. The council agreed that Mayor Mike Johnson would remain the appointee to the Humboldt County Association of Governments (HCOG) with Council Member Chris Mobley listed as alternate; the mayor asked staff to check with Mobley to confirm she still wishes to serve as alternate. Mayor Johnson said he wished to remain on HCOG because the agency is in the middle of an executive-director search.
Other seats discussed at the meeting included Mayor Pro Tem Trent remaining as the appointee to HTA (the local transit agency) and Council Member Connolly taking on an alternate slot for that body. The council rearranged several appointments by consensus: a council member volunteered to serve as the primary Fortuna representative to the Redwood Region Economic Development Corporation (REDEC) and to swap primary/alternate responsibilities on related items. Council members also confirmed representation for the Fortuna Business Improvement District (FBID), Parks and Recreation, Historical Commission, Redwood Coast Energy Authority and the Indian Gaming Committee; several appointees and alternates will be confirmed with council members not present at the meeting.
A motion approving the recommended appointees, with staff directed to follow up with Council Member Mobley on whether she agrees to the alternate appointment, was made and seconded. The council voted Aye: Connolly, King, Mayor Pro Tem Trent and Mayor Mike Johnson (4-0); the motion passed.
Clerk Emmons noted that appointments can be revisited if meeting schedules change or if appointees later request reassignment. The council did not provide a detailed roster in the motion; staff will confirm outstanding alternates and update meeting minutes and appointment records accordingly.
