Rob McCauley of Napoleon in Henry County was elected president of the Ohio Senate by a 31-0 roll call during the inaugural session of the 136th General Assembly. The clerk called the roll after nominations closed, and the oath of office was administered by retired Henry County Common Pleas Judge Denise Herman McCauley.

The nomination process began when Sen. Christina Roebner placed McCauley’s name into nomination and Sen. Susan Manchester seconded it. After a motion to close nominations, the clerk conducted a roll call vote that yielded 31 yays and 0 nays.

Roebner, in nominating McCauley, said the chamber was seeking “someone of honor and integrity and of character,” and described him as principled and articulate. After being sworn in, McCauley thanked constituents, family and staff and outlined his approach to leading the chamber. “I pledge to work for you. I pledge to be somebody who is going to collaborate with you,” McCauley said in brief remarks.

The vote and oath concluded the formal election process for the president’s office; the session proceeded to the election of other officers and several organizational resolutions.
