Anna Gonzales, the district’s director of community affairs, told the Aurora West USD 129 Board of Education on Jan. 6 that second semester is "in full swing" and reviewed family engagement and student events planned through early February.

Gonzales said Greenman Elementary will host a parent cafe at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 13. West Aurora High School will offer a financial aid application workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, and a class-of-2029 open house and athletics expo on Thursday, Jan. 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. The high school’s Air Force JROTC Kitty Hawk induction ceremony is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m., and a Winter Pep Assembly is set for Friday, Jan. 30, beginning at 1:50 p.m. Gonzales also announced that the Athletic Hall of Fame induction will take place Saturday, Feb. 1, before the boys varsity game.

Several school events were listed for mid-January: the West High winter play "Badger" is scheduled for Jan. 16–18 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium; the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) club will host a blood drive Thursday, Jan. 16, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at West High; and Hill Elementary will hold a Celebration of Learning on Jan. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. Gonzales reminded the board of no-school days: prekindergarten-only no school on Friday, Jan. 17; Monday, Jan. 20, district offices and schools closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; and Tuesday, Jan. 21, as a school-improvement day with no students in attendance.

Gonzales corrected a previously circulated calendar entry: the College Career and Wellness Fair has been moved to Feb. 28 and the district updated calendar entries to reflect that change.

Superintendent Dr. Smith said administrators will hold a midyear meeting later in the week with the executive leadership team to review progress and plan to "finish strong" for the semester. Student board members reported that the West High varsity girls bowling team opens Jan. 7 at Glenbard Co-op, and they highlighted Hall Elementary students who raised $750 for the American Red Cross to aid hurricane victims through a weeklong change drive.
