City launches Lacey Community Academy pilot after strong interest; applications already full

The City of Lacey will pilot a six‑week Lacey Community Academy beginning Feb. 20 to provide residents a behind‑the‑scenes overview of city operations, staff said Jan. 7. The program is intended to inform residents about local government functions and to cultivate future volunteers for boards and commissions.
Ginny Bowers (program lead) said the academy will run six Thursdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m., cover departments including Public Works, Community & Economic Development, Parks, Culture & Recreation, Police and Finance, and will be limited to 15 participants drawn from city residents and the urban growth area. The application, posted Jan. 2, produced 31 applications by the Jan. 7 meeting; staff said they may expand the pilot slightly but will start with a smaller cohort.
“Applications are already full… we have 31 applications already,” the presenter said. The course will include tours, interactive sessions and a budget overview meant to clarify city finances and service delivery.
Council members encouraged the program and discussed possible future sessions; staff said they will evaluate the pilot and consider repeat sessions if demand remains high.
