New Iberia awards ARPA drainage cleanout contract for Area B to Iberia Aggregates

The New Iberia City Council voted to award a contract to Iberia Aggregates and Construction Materials LLC for the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) Drainage Cleanout Project, Area B, and authorized the mayor to execute necessary documents.
Mayor DeCourte and city engineering staff described Area B as covering West Arnold, Doyle, Marigold, the upper M-10 and the Commercial Canal from Anne Street to the city limit. City staff said this award is part of a larger $1 million city set-aside to clean major canals; two additional areas (Areas C and D) will be advertised for bid in the coming weeks to complete the overall program before year‑end.
Engineer Chandler told the council Area B will include the Commercial Canal and that some canal segments have never been cleaned. Council members asked whether the city would notify Iberia Parish and work with the parish on contiguous canal segments; the mayor said the city will send a list of sections the city will clean and will coordinate with the parish where the canals cross jurisdictional lines.
Why this matters: Canal cleanouts are intended to improve drainage and reduce local flooding. The mayor framed the program as the city’s most comprehensive canal-cleaning effort in recent memory and said funding was set aside to ensure contract work is completed this year.
Next steps: The mayor and public works staff said they will advertise the remaining areas for bid "in a few weeks" and coordinate with the parish on adjacent segments.
