Commission holds first reading of proposed tree ordinance updating protected-tree rules

City staff presented the first reading of a proposed ordinance to update Chapter 45 (trees) of the Ocoee Code of Ordinances during the Jan. 7 meeting.
A staff member summarized the draft ordinance’s objectives: clarify the definition of a protected tree, require just cause for removal of protected trees, establish a review and permit process through Development Services and the City Commission, set documentation standards for removals on residential property, and identify prohibited activities and pruning standards. "We were directed to bring back a new ordinance to try to address some of the issues, in particular, private communities, the issue of the state statute and single family dwelling units being able to take down a diseased tree and pruning," a staff member said.
The ordinance text was read into the record for first reading. Staff told the commission they anticipate scheduling a second reading in February to allow time for review and to collect comments. A commissioner said he already had
