Organizers of Mural Fest asked the Beaumont City Council on Jan. 7 to let them develop artwork and return with final designs to paint interior foyer walls and two exterior walls at the downtown Civic Center as part of the festival planned the weekend of March 8.
The request, presented by Emily Wheeler of the city and Minh, the local promoter for Mural Fest, included a proposal for a community-built mosaic to remain on display and a lineup of visiting mural artists. City tourism staff said last year’s festival brought out-of-town visitors and local spending: 31% of attendees were from outside Beaumont, about 42% reported spending at nearby businesses, and 34% came from other states, city promotional materials said.
