Policy committee advances multiple board policies, recommends repeal of two; schedules Feb. 12 meeting

The New Braunfords School District Policy Committee on Jan. 8, 2025, reviewed second readings of several board policies — including Policy 1 (Investigation), Policy 2 (Authority and Powers), Policy 4 (Membership), Policy 5 (Organization), Policy 7 (Policy Manual Access), Policy 151 (Title I: operability of services income PPR) and Policy 918 (Title I: impairment and income PPR) — and recommended forwarding them to the full school board for consideration. The committee also recommended repealing Policy 0 (Objectives) and Policy 5.1 (Officers).

Mister Giazio, a district staff member who presented the items, described the package as compliance-oriented. “All of these are fairly straightforward, generally compliance based policies, and that sort of just outline the role of the board in very and and responsibilities of the board at meetings and at your organization meeting and how you select your officers and things like that,” he said.

The policies under review primarily restate the board’s responsibilities at meetings and procedures for selecting officers, according to Giazio. Committee members discussed minor housekeeping changes; no substantive rewrites were reported during the meeting.

Committee members asked about stakeholder input and the Title I materials the group had requested. A committee member said the Title I information had been sent and outlined plans for collecting additional feedback: staff will receive a partial survey and the committee will circulate process notes and survey results before the next policy meeting. Committee members noted a parent concern raised earlier about whether proposed language would apply to all student devices, including iPads; the committee said that point will be clarified as part of the outreach.

The committee also discussed facility signage related to sledding on school property and heard that facilities staff have begun work on appropriate language; members said a separate policy would not be required to allow signage to indicate use at one’s own risk.

The committee asked for approval of minutes from the Dec. 11 meeting and moved to advance the reviewed policies to the full board; the transcript does not record a formal roll-call vote. There were no public comments during the meeting.

The Policy Committee scheduled its next meeting for Feb. 12, 2025, at 6 p.m. in room B226 at Strathair Middle School. Committee members discussed timing for a first-reading of the revised policies; one speaker said the first reading had been planned for March 4 but work on outreach may push that step to April.

Minutes and policy materials were discussed as the next steps; committee members asked staff to circulate survey results and any revised language in advance of the Feb. 12 meeting.
