The permit was approved after the council opened a public hearing and heard from applicant Gene Burks, who described his experience operating pawn shops in nearby towns and said he already serves about 1,149 customers in the 76067 area. The council voted to approve the permit 6-0.
A city staff member reminded the council that a specific-use permit is required to operate a pawn shop in a General Retail (GR) district. During his remarks, Burks said he planned exterior repairs and cleanup of the property and that existing customers from Weatherford, Graham and Bridgeport would patronize the location. No members of the public opposed the application during the hearing.
Council members moved and seconded approval; the motion carried unanimously. The council gave no further conditions on the permit in the public record.
The pawn shop address listed in the agenda was 2010 Southeast First Street, Block 10 Lot 3, Wynwood Addition, Mineral Wells. The council closed the public hearing and voted the same night.
