The Board of Supervisors approved an amendment Tuesday directing the Treasurer‑Tax Collector and several county departments to review the county’s list of tax‑defaulted properties and report back within 45 days on potential uses — including interim housing, parks, mental‑health access centers and affordable housing.
Supervisor Janice Hahn said the review could identify vacant parcels the county might purchase to address homelessness, create park space or partner with nonprofits such as Habitat for Humanity. Hahn proposed the board letter amendment to instruct the Treasurer‑Tax Collector, CEO homelessness initiatives staff, Parks and Recreation, Mental Health, the Los Angeles County Development Agency and the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority — in consultation with the County Affordable Housing Solutions Agency — to return with recommendations and a 45‑day review timeframe.
Hahn said the change followed a National Association of Counties report and examples of jurisdictions that have kept tax‑defaulted parcels out of corporate ownership. The board approved the amendment and the item as amended by voice/roll call vote.
The motion was moved by Supervisor Janice Hahn and seconded by Supervisor Holly Mitchell; the roll call recorded ayes from Supervisors Hilda Solis, Holly Mitchell, Lindsey Horvath, Janice Hahn and Kathryn Barger and the motion passed.
