Jefferson Township seeks cost-sharing with North Pocono SD for radar speed signs on Route 348 near Lyons Road

At the start of its January meeting the North Pocono School Board received a letter from Jefferson Township reporting that bids were opened in December for two permanent radar speed display signs on State Route 348 at the Lyons Road approaches.

Board member Mr. Bassi read the letter into the record. The township letter says bids were awarded to Kreger Construction as the lowest bidder, pending review by the township solicitor and township engineer.

"The township will bear the responsibility of all maintenance costs for the signs once installed," Mr. Bassi said while reading the correspondence. The letter asked the district to consider negotiating an agreement to share installation costs to bring the anticipated safety improvement to fruition and to improve safety in the corridor serving Jefferson Elementary Center.

The letter notes the permitting and approval process dated back to fall 2021 and that the township executed and funded the permitting steps to date. The township sent the bid results to the school board and said it will update the district on its internal review and then ask for conversation on a cost-sharing agreement.

No formal motion or vote on the radar signs was recorded in the meeting excerpt; the item was presented as correspondence and informational for the board. The township’s solicitor and engineer review remain listed as outstanding steps before the installation could proceed.
