San Juan County commissioners and newly elected county officers took oaths of office at the start of the commission’s monthly meeting, which the chair called to order at 11:04 a.m.
The ceremony included the swearing-in of Linus Pearson as San Juan County treasurer; Brad Bonekers as county surveyor; Rick Meyer as county assessor; and Cindy Folio as county recorder. The commissioners also recognized a recently seated commissioner and marked the occasion with an oath administered by Judge Hazleton.
The gathering included a brief reception for family photos and several commissioners’ remarks welcoming the new officials. Commissioners and staff thanked outgoing and returning colleagues for their service and noted continuity in county operations as the new term begins.
Why it matters: swearing-in ceremonies make appointments official and signal the start of new terms. The commission noted this meeting as the first time it has had two women serving concurrently as commissioners, a point commissioners described as historic for the board.
The remainder of the meeting proceeded to scheduled business and public comment. BLM staff offered to return to a future meeting to present on the Bears Ears National Monument management plan.
What’s next: The commission moved from the ceremonial portion of the meeting to regular agenda items, including required annual training and a consent agenda of routine approvals.
