Veneta Utilities Authority accepts cybersecurity grant, approves sewer pump repair and engineering contract

The Veneta Utilities Authority on Jan. 7 voted to accept a $39,248 cybersecurity grant from the Oklahoma Office of Homeland Security that requires a $11,775 local match (30%) and approved two infrastructure items: a $75,100 estimate to repair a pump motor at the sewer plant and a contract with VIIRS Engineering to design an 8-inch sewer line for the industrial park addition.
Misty DeFman, the city's economic and community development coordinator, described the Homeland Security grant as funding "new hardware and a new computer as well as upgrading the software" for the water treatment plant and said the current setup "is not very efficient or safe as far as cyber security" and that the upgrade "will also add additional cyber security to all of the computers in the city." The council moved and seconded the measure and approved the grant acceptance by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
The board next approved estimate number 13095, a $75,100 repair to replace a pump motor at the sewer plant. Officials said the motor had failed and staff had to reassign other motors temporarily to keep the system operating. The board approved paying the expense from the water/wastewater reserve account.
Finally, the board authorized the mayor to sign a professional services contract with VIIRS Engineering to design an 8-inch sewer line for the industrial park addition (project number 24-52). Officials said engineering fees and the project will be paid with a REAP grant from Grand Gateway.
All three items passed after motions and seconds; board members voiced "aye" and no council member registered an objection during the votes.
The authority moved next into its superintendent report following the actions above and did not take further formal actions on those items at the meeting.
