A Cobb Emergency Management spokesperson said Cobb County will close its nonessential operations Friday as a winter storm expected to bring snow and ice moves through the region.
The spokesperson, representing Cobb Emergency Management, said the county manager and emergency staff concluded that closing county offices Friday will keep as many county employees off the road as possible while crews prepare and respond. "If you don't have to get out on Friday, please do not go anywhere. Let the crews do their jobs," the spokesperson said.
The National Weather Service forecast cited by county staff calls for up to 4 inches of snow in Cobb County and as much as a quarter-inch of ice. County officials told the meeting they expect road conditions to start deteriorating by midmorning Friday.
CobbDOT crews will pre-treat roadways in advance of the storm and switch to salt-and-sand materials during the event to maintain travel lanes, the spokesperson said. The county emphasized that essential personnel are exempt from the closure and that road-treatment operations will continue until the storm passes.
The announcement included procedural checks completed in recent weeks: crews inspected equipment, verified preventative maintenance and drove planned routes during an inclement-weather exercise to confirm readiness. The spokesperson said those preparations are intended to let crews "get in a truck, put material in there and spread it on the roads" when the storm arrives.
Officials urged residents to stay home on Friday unless travel is essential and to follow updates from Cobb Emergency Management and the National Weather Service as conditions evolve.
