Resident raises outage and brightness concerns as village readies new streetlights

Kate Cooper, a Shorewood resident, asked the village board during public comment whether repairs were underway for recent streetlight outages and whether a particularly bright fixture seen at Downer and Marion reflected the style the village plans to install.
Trustee Kudo said staff had identified the selected fixture and that the bright light Cooper saw was not where the new standard fixture would be placed. “There has been 1 selected. That is not where it was placed,” Kudo said, adding that the installed fixtures are dimmable and adjustments can be made after placement.
A member of the conservation committee told the board the committee had recommended lights that comply with “dark sky standards” to limit light intrusion into homes and to help wildlife. “We made recommendations to the board to use, tree lights that would comply with, what's called the dark sky standards to help minimize the light coming into people's homes to keeping them up at night, and they're also better for wildlife,” the committee member said.
Manager Ewald was reported as telling the board staff were troubleshooting widespread outages caused by recent freeze-thaw weather patterns; no timeline for full repair was provided during the meeting.
The board encouraged Cooper to send a photo and location to public works for follow-up information and possible adjustment after the fixtures are in place.
