Council awards Safe Routes to School sidewalk contract to Smith Paving for $252,214.50; ODOT to reimburse 90%

The Bryan City Council approved Ordinance No. 22025, awarding a contract to Smith Paving and Excavating Incorporated for the Safe Routes to School sidewalk project on West South Street.
City staff reported that Smith Paving submitted the low bid of $252,214.50. The project will extend sidewalk on the south side of West South Street, continuing from the end of a prior project on Noble Drive and running down to Main Street. The project is funded as an ODOT program; staff said the city will receive reimbursement for 90% of construction costs through the Ohio Department of Transportation. All required easements have been obtained and construction could start in spring.
Council approved suspending the rules and awarding the contract. A minor textual revision in section 3 of the ordinance was noted by staff (a word substitution requested by a colleague named Fischel) but did not change the substance of the emergency language. The motion to award the contract passed with unanimous votes from council members.
